About our Guest Judge
David Methven
David Methven is a Scottish-born bagpiper now based in Massachusetts, with more than 40 years of experience in solo and pipe band performance. A highly accomplished competitor, he won many solo titles early in his piping career and has secured five World Pipe Band Championships—including three as Pipe Major—along with the Scottish, European, and British Championships, as well as Champion of Champions titles. He also served as Pipe Sergeant of a Grade 1 band that achieved a top-5 finish in its first year at that level, bringing 15 years of Grade 1 experience.
An accomplished craftsman with over 25 years as a bagpipe maker, David also produces bagpipe reeds and bags that are used by pipers worldwide. He is the brother of Pipe Major Scott Methven, former personal piper to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and in 2018 he had the honor of playing for the Queen at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Earlier in his career, he performed at the Stirling premiere of the film Braveheart, where he met Mel Gibson and Sean Connery.
David has performed extensively across the United States and internationally, including tours with the British Army, The Band of the Irish Guards, and The Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 Scots) on their 2010 USA tour, as well as the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland in 2010 with 7 Scots The Royal Regiment of Scotland. He is a featured performer on the triple-platinum album The Lone Piper, which reached No. 2 on the Scottish album charts and entered the Billboard World Music Top 10 in the United States.
Now serving as Pipe Major of the Worcester Kiltie Pipe Band, David is a respected instructor, adjudicator, and performer throughout New England. Several of his students have gone on to win World Pipe Band Championship titles, while others have led bands to World Championships and many additional major titles. His depth of experience, craftsmanship, and dedication to the piping tradition continue to inspire the next generation.
