Medieval Armor Combat.

Maine Highland Games are proud to introduce the Portland Reavers.

A team of newly formed individuals that take part in combat dressed in Full Medieval Armor. Although full body armor was rarely used in Scottish Battles they were, since Norman times at least, were the tooled up way to go!

The Scots for example, had no heavy cavalry at Bannockburn. Instead, their knights and men-at-arms fought almost exclusively on foot. The Bruce’s army did, however, include a body of light cavalry, probably made up mostly of men from the Scottish Borders. Riding small fell ponies or ‘Galloway nags’, these mobile and rugged horsemen were equipped in a similar way to the better-armed spearmen in the schiltrons, with quilted aketons or gambesons ( similar to a modern flak vest ) and iron helmets, but usually no leg armour. Their weapon was the light cavalry spear, which later gave these troops the nickname ‘prickers’. Other weapons might include the arming sword and dagger. Like their English counterparts, the Scottish light cavalry would sometimes dismount to fight on foot.

This display however, i’m sure will give the public a taste of hand to hand Armored combat and of course what it was like to…. fight for ones life, home, or country !

Here’s a small snippet with the combat team in action. I will update this regularly.
